Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG): Basic Moves
Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) is a spectacular sport where every movement demands strength, flexibility, and coordination. Before performing the impressive routines seen in competition, gymnasts must first master the basic figures.
Whether you're a beginner, the parent of a young gymnast, or simply a fan, let's discover together the essential elements to know… and how to find them also in the card game Beam Bam Gym!
Basic Floor Exercises in Women's Artistic Gymnastics
The floor is often gymnasts' favorite apparatus, as it combines acrobatics and artistic expression. Basic figures include:
- Forward and backward rolls: learning to curl up safely.
- The cartwheel: a classic that develops coordination and spatial awareness.
- Handstand (ATR): balancing on your hands. (often called a headstand by non-gymnasts)
- Salto: the foundation of many forward and backward acrobatic elements
- Gymnastic leaps (split, tuck, straight legs).
- Pivots
- Round-off, flick, and handspring: essential for preparing complex tumbling passes
These elements are the foundation for all acrobatics and complete routines that we admire in experienced gymnasts. They also prepare for figures on other apparatuses, especially vault and beam.
Basic Beam Figures in Women's Artistic Gymnastics
The beam is only 10 cm wide: balance and precision are essential. Basic elements include:
- Walking on relevé and simple movements.
- L-sits
- Pivots: turning on oneself without losing balance
- Simple jumps (split, tuck, half-turn, anterior-posterior)
- Balance and cartwheel
- Straight jump dismount
👉 These basics then allow gymnasts to learn more complex elements and routines, with spectacular acrobatics.
Basic Uneven Bars Figures in Women's Artistic Gymnastics
Bars require strength and coordination. Basic figures include:
- Simple hang (holding on).
- Swings
- Close turns (e.g., clear hip circle backward)
- Kip: first step towards fluid and aerial routines
- Simple dismounts (such as the flyaway or escape dismount)
👉 These elements are essential for progressing to more complex elements such as giant swings (L-grip/reverse grip) or bar releases.
Basic Vault Figures in Women's Artistic Gymnastics
Vault is an explosive apparatus where the run-up is crucial. Basic elements include:
- Rabbit jump
- Handspring
- First vaults with half-turn (round-off and Petrick)
👉 With mastery of these basics and a controlled run-up, one can then progress to more complex vaults such as the Tsukahara or the Yurchenko.
Why These Figures Are Essential
These elements are the foundations of gymnastics:
- They develop strength, flexibility, and confidence.
- They teach safe landings.
- They are indispensable for accessing higher levels.
And most importantly… they are already an exciting playground for aspiring gymnasts!
